About the Song
Fred Small first recorded this song on his 1983 "Heart of the Apaloosa" album on Rounder Records.
The "soldier" Small refers to in the 3rd verse is Pres. Dwight David Eisenhower, who was the top army general in Europe during World War II. The original quote is:
"I like to believe that people, in the long run, are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it." from a radio & TV broadcast with Prime Minister Macmillan in 1959
